Font design inspired by a beautiful place in New Zealand. The idea came from a range of stimulus in “the Naki”. The crisp cold mountain streams, the sharp bright summer light, the contrast of the bold dark Mt Taranaki shooting into the sky against Len Lye’s spindly Wind Wand undulating to and fro in the sea breeze.

Monthly magazine design and layout

For almost a year I worked on an upmarket monthly magazine for Taranaki residents. My role was to collect content for editorials and adverts and lay everything out. Designing for magazines involves speed, creativity, ingenuity, flexibility and the patience of a saint. Every month I worked with many people from a wide range of professions to create an attractive public platform for local business which succeeded to consistently stimulate a devout reader fan base. Each advert and article was designed to have its own character whilst reinforcing and sustaining the LIVE magazine brand.

Creating LIVE used a variety of techniques but it was pulled together seamlessly using Adobe InDesign.

User experience and information architecture upgrade for a long run steel roofing manufacturer. Steelformers came to us with their site that had previously been designed and populated with information from an old website. We were approached with a large wad of product information and a plan to separate the site into two areas, one for trade and one for homeowners. I had doubt about the effects of separating customers based on thier knowledge and was concerned about inbetweeners such as in the case of DIY. You wouldn’t want to bamboozle people with a little knowledge with all the hard facts but it is equally important to supply detailed information. After much consideration and information organisation I put forward a plan to hide information in Russian-doll type product boxes. Starting with product shots and a brief description the user can go into as much detail as they want by sliding open ever more detailed contents. Each product is also linked to the colour options available for it and all other products that can be used in conjunction. The result is an extremely information heavy site that markets products attractively and acts equally as an efficient information resource.

Two websites designed for New Zealand Honda franchises. The two companies wanted websites that looked similar but distinguished to present their products and services to a market of boisterous kiwi lads. The design aims to communicate the excitement and adrenaline in tearing around the countryside on a Honda whilst reinforcing the brands colour palette. The headers and flash banners differ to reflect the two target markets.

Website construction with elaborate animation.

Design and intro animation for a construction company based in Hawks Bay. Atkin wanted a slick modern site with flash animation. The site is designed to look modern, reliable, intelligent and approachable. Although I usually advise against long introductions to keep loading speeds up, Atkin were determined they needed one to make the site exciting. To keep the site accessible to a wide range of devises and avoid the need for complex flash content management, I decided to use javascript to create all the animation. Created whilst I was working at Fire design New Zealand in collaboration with James Simmonds at Webfox.

This multi-faced site was created to promote the New Plymouth District Council’s Event venues. All that existed before were factsheets on the main council website. In order to attract more functions and events, the sites needed to shine. I created a landing page and 3 sites for TSB Stadium, TSB Bowl of Brooklands and Yarrow Stadium. I was asked to match the sites to an existing design for TSB Showplace… but I couldn’t help souping it up a bit. Unique wallpapers were created for each venue as part of a larger branding operation for all the venues primarily created by Alana Clark @ Fire design before I joined.
